Suyati Dedicated Global Teams – Frequently Asked Questions with Answers!
1 What is a dedicated global team?
Dedicated Global Team (or DGT) is a unique offering from Suyati for technology product and service companies. A company can create an extension of its development/technical/support team in India by working with Suyati.
For example, if a company in the United States or Europe finds it difficult to get software architects and programmers in Java or .Net/C# at a competitive cost, it could choose to create a team in India through Suyati. Suyati will hire a team in India based on the company’s requirements as Suyati’s employees for the longer term, typically over a year.

2 How can a client be sure that Suyati’s DGT will meet its requirements?
Suyati builds a team from scratch (ground up) for its client under the DGT model. We work with the client, get in depth requirements and provide recommendations on the composition and skillsets for the team. Suyati’s extensive network of recruiters all over India then go to work to identify suitable candidates. After two to three rounds of interviews focused on the candidates technical skills, attitude and aptitude, the candidate is shortlisted for one or two rounds of final interviews with the client. Once the client approves of the candidate, an offer is made to the candidate and if the candidate accepts, he or she is brought into Suyati to work specifically on client’s projects. Each team member will recruited this way and then consequently the team that is build has the skills that the client needs to deliver its projects.

3 What kinds of services can be supported through the DGT model?
All services that require programming, development, testing, analysis, back-office support, technical support, sales support, etc., that has components that can be successfully outsourced to an extended team for a lower cost in India can be supported through the DGT model.

4 How long does it take to set up a DGT?

It depends on many factors. Generally, it takes about 3-4 months to put together a team of 5-20 people. The assumption is that a contractual understanding is reached between Suyati and the client prior to initiating the recruitment process. Some of the factors that may influence the timeline are availability of talent, cost considerations, ability of the client to interview and provide feedback proactively to fine tune the hiring process, time of the year, etc.

That said, it does not mean that it would take any longer to hire a team larger than 20. A lot of these factors that affect team ramp up can be controlled and mitigated to achieve set targets. We have hired over 40 people in less than 3 months in one instance.

5 Is it advisable for a small or medium company to immediately set up operations of its own in India?

The answer again is – it depends. The path is fraught with risks. A thorough understanding of what it takes to start and operate in India is required. This not only call for significant up front investments but also local operations know how. Suyati’s principals have directly helped its clients to set up operations in several locations in India including Chandigarh, Pune and Kochi through various models.

For example a 50 seater facility with all the required communication equipment, software and servers would require an investment of close to a million US dollars. In addition, the time taken to create a facility of that nature and secure the government licenses (12 different agencies) will be over 8-9 months. Branding to attract the right talent is no easy chore as well. So, for small to medium companies it is recommended that a DGT option be considered seriously and if the team size develops then DGT can be migrated to the company’s own subsidiary through either the B-O-T or the JV option. This will help the company to reduce its upfront investment dramatically and invest in improving its top line.

6 What would be a typical client profile?

Small to medium technology companies with anywhere from a 25 – 1000 employees and with a sales of several million to a several hundred million dollars. These companies may have cash flow or investment constraints that would prevent them from setting up their own development centers. These companies may also want to leverage India for innovation through retaining a team of qualified people in India and to potentially transplant them into its own subsidiary or related operations one day. Some of the companies are at their initial founding stages and may want to take advantage of our risk sharing models within the framework of the DGT offering.

That said, companies with the resources to enter India on their own could take advantage of Suyati’s B-O-T or other strategic consulting services to minimize their set up and operational risks in India.

7 Will the DGT members be Suyati employees? Can they be contractors to Suyati?

Yes. However, other options can be discussed when we review Suyati’s B-O-T or JV models within the DGT framework.

Suyati can also hire contract employees on a client’s behalf. But these tend to be short term and are generally more expensive. For temporary ramp ups and downs, we could plan a contract team around a more permanent core DGT.

8 How would a client, benefit with B-O-T approach?

B-O-T stands for Build-Operate-and-Transfer. This is an eventual conversion of an existing DGT into a team that is completely transferred to a client’s own registered operation in India.

If required, the client can enter into an upfront contract with Suyati to take advantage of the B-O-T option. This would also help Suyati set expectations with the employees joining the client’s DGT that the team is likely to be moved into the client’s own Indian operation (a subsidiary or otherwise) over a period of time. In our experience, early expectation setting with the employees is critical in order to remove any transitional issues with an employee when the client wants to leverage the B-O-T option.

This is recommended if the client wants to develop and grow its own brand in India and is planning to leverage its Indian presence for future revenue generation activities. The client may also want to do this to achieve an even more direct control over the management of its resources. This also makes sense if the team size is over 50 and the client is comfortable enough to manage a set up in India. Suyati can help the client with this every step of the way, right from company formation, meeting statutory requirements, helping to get tax benefits, hiring attorneys and accountants, setting up HR processes, etc.

9 How would a client, benefit with JV approach?
JV stands for Joint Venture. As in a B-O-T (please see the answer to the previous question), a DGT is converted to a JV, but the difference is in the ownership of the operation. Suyati can have shared ownership of the JV operation along with its client and therefore share both the opportunity and the related costs and risks.

10 If a client decides to migrate from the DGT model to a BOT or JV, will Suyati assist the transition?

Suyati employees are hired as part of the DGT for the client. As the client opts for a BOT or a JV framework on their successful establishment in India, employees will be given the option to transition to the new entity created per the BOT or the JV agreement with the client. Suyati is experienced in addressing employee concerns pertaining to transitions and will do its best to ensure effective transitions. Employees may also opt to stay on with Suyati and continue on other relevant projects.

11 What is so unique about Suyati’s Dedicated Global Team (DGT) offering?

Suyati’s offering is unique in many ways. The uniqueness is due to a totally ground up approach of building a team with a specific focus of creating long term value to the client. Key benefits include:
· Innovation and not just inexpensive programming
· Risk and revenue sharing models; At cost services to tackle cash flow constraints
· Low cost of entry into India; Leverage local presence and networks
· Build-operate-transfer (BOT) and Joint Venture (JV) agreements
· Align with India, China and Asia Pacific markets through product customization and positioning

More details on each one of these differentiators are provided as answers to specific questions pertaining to each differentiating factor.

12 How much do you charge for the DGT service?
The charges generally depend on the cost of the resource required for the team. Talent cost varies significantly in India and generally people with better technical and communication skills and with higher / reputed university degrees and qualifications cost more. A range is provided after initial discussions with the client to understand skill and experience requirements of the team and the billing rate/monthly charges generally fall within that range.

13 Do you provide consulting services to companies that want to set up offices in India?
Yes! A client can leverage our experiences in setting up teams and infrastructure at various locations in India through direct consulting services provided by our Senior Management and Technical Experts.

14 What are your areas of domain expertise? Is that not essential for success?
Suyati and its team have helped companies in many domains in one capacity or another in its current or its previous avatars. That said, the concept of DGT that Suyati espouses does not require specific domain expertise to begin with. We say that because, with a DGT, the team is built from scratch. Our HR function has deep and wide networks in India after setting up teams with different technology and domain skills. Also, India has now been a major outsourcing hub for companies across various industries for almost two decades and more recently over the last 5 years a major R&D hub many of the technology companies among the Fortune 500. Therefore, it is relatively easy to find people with the technical and related domain know-how in India. The key to be able to tap such resources is Suyati’s major skill through its recruiting networks.

15 How is innovation possible with DGT?
With the DGT framework we believe that we can deliver R&D and subsequent innovation from India. Innovation is directly related to the creation of a talented team that stays together for a longer time and that has access to excellent infrastructure and a knowledge base. India has been a hub for R&D for large Fortune 500 companies for many years now and it is possible to tap the right talent with the relevant experience to induct into the team. Suyati can establish these critical conditions for innovation relatively quickly as its management has the experience in rapidly establishing R&D teams. Read more about it in our case study on this topic.

16 How would Suyati share the client’s risk through DGT?
Under certain conditions we are willing to help with small and medium companies to get started almost at cost and then pay a premium when the DGT becomes productive. This calls for good planning and up front expectation setting on both sides and will need to be evaluated in detail.

17 How can a client participate in India’s and Asia’s high GDP growth for the next decade?

Suyati is very willing to help its client potentially enter India’s market for its products. For the next two decades, the Indian and Asian markets hold tremendous promise predicted to that their markets outperform the large western markets (USA or Europe). India's GDP alone is estimated to grow at an average of 7.5%. Companies with a local presence and local preparedness stand to gain in the long term by positioning themselves to tap into the Indian/Asian markets.

Suyati can assist in helping its client work with local experts to understand and customize its products or services for the local market in India. India may also be used as a base for tapping into or entering near-by markets of South Asian countries and China as well.

18 Why is Suyati different?
The biggest difference is the vision that drives the company. The vision is to help companies create an extension of their technical teams in India to deliver longer tem value to the top line of our clients. We are not necessarily focused on merely cost cutting as that would end up being a short term endeavor and that focus alone won’t deliver long term returns. More differences between typical off-shore service providers and Suyati are included:

Typical Off-shore Service Providers   Suyati

Sub-standard infrastructure – insufficient communication, power back-up, computing power, network and training resources   High-end infrastructure built for software product development enabling close communication between US and India teams; Situated inside INFOPARK (www.infoparkkochi.com), a well maintained Technology Park with top notch civil, power, data and communication infrastructure.

Any and every project whether fixed or time and material   Long term staff development and augmentation out of India with a tight connection to the client’s team anywhere in the world through excellent communication and processes

Insufficient network and Intellectual Property (IP) security   Secure fire-walls, physical and video security; We understand IP security and treat it with great seriousness and accountability.

Plays no role on the development of on-site skills for offshore management on the client side   Partner with the recruitment/development of onsite resources to ensure the client’s capability to gain the most out of an offshore relationship

Generally no understanding of US/Western culture and management styles   Over 20 years of driving technology product development efforts in the United States; US investors and majority ownership.

Prefer to deal with larger companies whose core business may or may not be software   Prefer to deal with small to mid-size software development companies start-ups

Lower quality resources driven by cost considerations only   Higher quality resources chosen by client with the right communication, attitude and technical skills

Not open to joint ventures or build-operate-transfer models   Will facilitate Joint Ventures and Build-Operate-Transfer approaches; Proven experience in this area.

Operations generally located in high cost destinations with high staff turnover such as Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad   Main development center located in Kochi, an emerging top technology destination, with excellent international access. Kochi provides a higher quality of life relative to larger Indian cities. This scenario is comparable to how Indianapolis (akin to Kochi) compares to Bangalore (akin to New York).

19 What about the client’s IP? How do you protect it?
We take IP protection very seriously. All our employees and contractors are required to sign confidentiality and IP protection agreements with us. We also have similar agreements with our clients. Apart from the agreements, we have excellent physical, network and video security in our premises. Our primary owners and the management fully understand IP protection and extremely zealous in ensuring it.

20 Would Suyati hire contractors within the DGT model?
This would depend on our client’s needs. If the client needs rapid ramp up and downsizing of teams based on work requirements, we could support this model around a permanent core DGT. Contractors do cost more and the client decides if this option should be pursued.

21 Can Suyati set up teams for global technical support out of India?
Yes! Suyati can set up teams for global technical support for companies under the DGT framework. Support can be both voice and or e-mail support. Also, level 3 (bug fixing and product update support) can also be provided by establishing a DGT. This could be a good starting point for migration of the DGT towards innovative product development for our client partner.
